Facials: What To Expect

On arrival a consultation will be carried out to find out about your health and well being; this will highlight any focus areas as well as deciding how to adapt the treatment specifically to your needs. It also allows you to ask any questions you may have as well as allowing the therapist to determine whether a treatment is suitable. (Treatment may be unsuitable due to some medical conditions, please see contraindications page for more details).

An initial decision will be made on the facial treatment that you require depending upon what you would like to achieve – once your skin has been cleaned and analysed a final decision can be agreed upon.

You will be able to make yourself comfortable on the treatment couch, the therapist will cover you with a towel or blanket and ensure that your hair is pulled away from your face.

Cleansing removes make up, dirt, bacteria, pollution, the top layer of loose dead skin cells and some congestion. The action of cleansing stimulates the circulation improving colour and cell regeneration.

At this stage the skin is ready to be analysed so that the correct products can be chosen for the treatment.

Toning removes traces of the products used during the facial, it refines the texture of the skin, closes the pores and leaves the face feeling fresh.

Your skin type will determine which type of mask is used as part of the treatment.
Setting masks are made of clay, kaolin, magnesium or calamine, these masks absorb impurities from the skin leaving the face cleaned and refined.
Non setting masks are derived from plants fruits or herbs. These biological masks increase cell activity in the basal layer of the epidermis which improves skins texture; they are gentle, moisturising and hydrating.
Specialised masks are made from waxes, oils or gels and are suitable for mature or sun damaged skin as they create a barrier preventing moisture loss.

The type of facial you have chosen will determine other products to be used such as exfoliation, steaming, moisturising and eye care. Please see treatment options for more details.
